Reichenstein Castle
Reichenstein Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 590 m above sea level on a valley slope of the Große Lauter near the Reichenstein district of the municipality of Lauterach in the Alb-Donau-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was built in the Staufer period, from which remains of ashlar blocks still originate, between 1230 and 1250 and was given by the Counts of Wartstein as a vassal castle to the Lords of Stein. After 1499, the castle passed to the Benedictine monastery of Zwiefalten and was destroyed in the German Peasants' War in 1525 (referred to as "alter Burgstall" around 1600). In 1803, the castle passed to Württemberg and in 1971, the 20-meter-high keep was restored.
