Reichenstein Castel

The construction of Reichenstein Castle probably took place at the beginning of the 13th century. Its strategic importance lay in protecting the imperial territory from the Wittelsbach areas around Heidelberg. Between 1292 and 1355 are the only documented mentions of the castle. From 1329, it passed into the possession of the Electors Palatine. Subsequently, Reichenstein quickly lost importance in favor of the nearby Dilsberg mountain fortress and fell into ruin by the 15th century at the latest. The complex was heavily altered, including by stone removal, agricultural use, and later construction and restoration work, so that today only a few authentic wall remains exist.
