Reifnitz Castle
The first attempt to build a fortified complex on the castle rock near St. Margarethen-Reifnitz probably dates back to the 8th or 9th century. In the following centuries, this developed into one of the most powerful castles around Lake Wörthersee, dominating the entire southern shore and the Keutschach lake valley.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1145. In 1242, the castle was owned by Duke Frederick II of Austria. In 1283, the Counts of Görz owned the complex.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Liebenberg family and in 1456 the Counts of Keutschach were the owners. The latter probably built the present Margarethenkirche (consecrated 1532) on the foundations of the castle chapel. From 1659 to approx. 1750, the castle was owned by the Rosenberg family, after which its decay began.
Today, only small remains of the main castle, the tower, and the outer bailey of the former triple castle are still present.
