Reinegg Castle

The caves were probably settled in prehistoric times. Originally, Reinegg was a refuge castle. Only when castles in the modern sense were built, the old refuge castle was adapted and expanded into a high and cave castle dominating the region. In 1176, the castle was first mentioned as "Castrum Rinecke".

Between 1139 and 1202, Baldwin von Osterwitz appears in a document in connection with Reinegg. At the end of the 13th century, Giselbert von Khünburg acquired the castle, which was then a Bamberg fief, from his nephew Offo. In 1309, Duke Otto of Carinthia enfeoffed Ulrich von Silberberg with the castle. In 1338, the Schenken von Osterwitz were in possession of the fortress.

In 1368, Hans der Schenk von Osterwitz renounced half of the castle in favor of his father Hermann. Further Reineggers, Andreas the Elder and Younger, are mentioned until 1482. In 1485, Emperor Frederick III granted Reinegg Castle and Burgstall to Leopold Ehrendorfer. From the phrase "Schloss und Burgstall" (castle and castle site), it can be seen that the castle was already in ruins and the owners had moved their residence to the castle. After the extinction of the Schenken family, the lordship passed.
