Rennenberg Castle

The castle is the ancestral seat of the noble family of Rennenberg, first mentioned in documents in 1217, which died out in 1585. In the middle of the 13th century, Rennenberg belonged to the feudal possessions of Countess Mechthild von Sayn (+1285), who transferred Rennenberg along with Altenwied and Neuerburg (both NR) to the Archdiocese of Cologne. The Lords of Rennenberg held their castle as a fief of the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 1532, Rennenberg Castle, which was already described as a ruin in 1585, passed to the von Lalaing, Counts of Hochstraten, and in 1765 to the von Salm, now Princes of Salm-Kyrburg. The princely house of Salm-Kyrburg leased the castle ruin in 1979 to a local castle association, which is working on the renovation of the complex.
