Riedegg Old Castle

Riedegg was first documented in 1145, when the brothers Marchard and Gottschalk von Ridecco, also known as Haunsperger, inhabited the castle. These high-ranking nobles owned cleared areas and resided on both Wildberg and Riedegg. Gottschalk der Haunsperger transferred the castle to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau to secure his daughter's inheritance, and then took it back as a Passau fief. In 1211, the property again fell to the Diocese of Passau, which held feudal sovereignty until 1411. The castle was administered by various burgraves, including Artolf der Piber (1351) and Hanns von Traun (1358). In 1380, Riedegg came into the possession of the Schaunberger family as a pledge, but they had to return it to Passau without compensation after the lost Schaunberger Feud. Later, the castle was pledged to Johann von Liechtenstein, who in turn sold the pledge to Heinrich von Wallsee.
