The remains of the castle can be visited

North of the church village of Riegelstein in the municipality of Betzenstein in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth are the remains of the Riegelstein Castle Ruin, a High Middle Ages noble castle. Of the former ridge castle, only two moats and a few unsecured wall remnants remain today, which are threatened by further decay.

History+

The exact construction period of Riegelstein Castle is unknown, but ceramic finds suggest it was built around the year 1200. The original builder is also not recorded. Around 1360, the castle may have been built by the Lords of Türriegel, who later named themselves after the castle and made it their ancestral seat. The castle itself was first documented around 1403, when it was owned by the brothers Hans, Georg, Dietrich, and Heinz Türriegel. In 1502, the Türriegels enfeoffed the castle to Margrave Friedrich II of Bayreuth and granted him the right of access. After the extinction of the Türriegel family in 1619, the Margrave confiscated the castle and enfeoffed Henning von Wilmersdorf with it.
