Rodenstein Castle

Rodenstein Castle was built around 1240 as a defensive fortress to counter the neighboring Reichenberg Castle. The Lords of Crumbach and Rodenstein, supported by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, were its builders. In 1346, Erkenger von Rodenstein sold half of his share to Count Wilhelm II of Katzenelnbogen. Further shares passed to Philipp I of Katzenelnbogen in 1433, and in 1436, Hans, Lord of Rodenstein and Lißberg, was enfeoffed with half of the castle. When the Katzenelnbogen family died out in 1479, their possessions fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse. The castle was not destroyed by wartime conflicts.
