Röthelstein Castle

Between 1170 and 1209, several members of a family who called themselves after Röthelstein are mentioned in documents. The existence of a fortified complex can therefore be assumed. The Röthelsteiners were ministeriales of the Vohburgs. Otto von Haslau the Younger also called himself after the castle in 1285, but he had nothing more to do with the old family. In 1318, Röthelstein was in the possession of Ulrich von Dachsberg, who sold it to the sovereign.

In 1411, Wilhelm von Enzersdorf was enfeoffed with the lordship by Duke Albrecht V. Röthelstein must have been a respectable complex at that time, as a visit by Emperor Frederick III is attested for 1459, and he would have had several castles to choose from in the immediate vicinity. Ulrich Rechlinger was followed in 1464 by Wilhelm von Missingsdorf as lord of the castle. Röthelstein was pledged several times in the 15th century, for example before 1479 to Erhart Falkensteiner from Langmannersdorf. However, the castle had already lost its importance and had become a ruin. In 1511, Count Peter von St. Georgen und Pösing, who had owned Röthelstein since 1479, left the dilapidated fortress to the municipality of Hainburg. In 1694, the still usable building parts were demolished and sold as building material.

Later, the ruin came into private ownership, but was finally taken over again by the city of Hainburg. The few remaining wall remnants were secured and restored by the municipality.
