Rötteln Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Rötteln Castle ruin, an impressive spur castle, towers above the hamlet of Rötteln in the Haagen district of Lörrach in southwestern Baden-Württemberg. It is one of the most powerful former fortifications in the region and the third largest castle ruin in Baden, visible from afar on a mountain spur.

History+

Rötteln Castle was first documented in 1259, when it was mentioned as a fief of Murbach Abbey, held by the Habsburgs and sub-fiefed to the Lords of Rötteln. Archaeological findings, particularly the keep dating from the 12th or early 13th century and parts of the palas around 1200, suggest an earlier origin. The Lords of Rötteln, a noble family traceable since the early 12th century, held high offices, including two Bishops of Basel. After the male line of the Lords of Rötteln died out in 1316, the castle passed to the Margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg, who made Rötteln their center of power. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered severe damage and was finally destroyed in 1678 during the Dutch War, sealing its loss of importance. Through the inheritance treaty of the Rötteler Gemächte, the castle fell to the Margraves of Baden in 1503.

Location+

The Rötteln Castle ruin is located in Lörrach-Haagen, in the district of Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 409 m above sea level.
