Rolandseck Castle

The castle was first mentioned in 1040 under the name Rulcheseck. In 1122, it was built by Archbishop Friedrich I of Cologne, together with the Nonnenwerth convent, possibly on the foundations of an older structure from 1040. In the 12th century, Rolandseck Castle served to secure the southern border of the Electorate of Cologne and formed a strategic triangle with Drachenfels and Wolkenburg castles. In the 14th century, it acquired its current name. After its destruction in the Burgundian War in 1475, it was rebuilt, but severely damaged by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War around 1632 and fell into ruin.
