The Ropperhausen Castle Ruin, a remnant of a medieval spur castle, is on a rocky ridge in the northeastern part of Großropperhausen.

History+

The construction of Ropperhausen Castle is attributed to the Lords of Heimbach, who, in the 13th century, owned both the castle and the court of Ropperhausen in addition to their ancestral seat. However, it is not fully clear how they acquired these lands. An alternative theory names the Lords of Gilsa as possible builders, who were already mentioned as landowners in the region in 1232. What is certain is that the von Gilsa acquired parts of the court and the village of Ropperhausen from 1354 onwards and remained lords of the castle until 1698.
