Rosegg Castle

Rosegg Castle was likely built between the second half of the 12th century and the early 13th century. It was probably the third ancestral seat of the Lords of Ras, an influential Carinthian noble family. They already called themselves Lords of Rosegg in 1171, although the castle itself was first documented in 1239. After the male line of the Ras family died out in 1318, the castle changed hands multiple times, passing to foreign noble families, including the Walsee-Graz and the Pettauer. Following the extinction of the Pettauer in 1438, the Counts of Schaunberg inherited the Rosegg dominion. In 1468, the castle was still intact. Renovations are documented for 1632 and, after a fire, before 1688.
