Rotenburg Castle
The Rotenburg castle ruin, a former hilltop castle, sits on a steep hill in the valley of the Kleine Wiese in Baden-Württemberg. Although only a few historical details have been preserved, the remaining wall fragments and the ramparts and moats show its former significance.

The exact period of the Rotenburg castle's construction is not fully clear, but the architecture of the core castle suggests it was built after 1200. It is possible that older ramparts already existed. The Lords of Rotenberg, a collateral line of the noble family of Rötteln, first mentioned in documents in the mid-13th century, are presumed to be the builders. After only two known generations, this line died out around 1280 with Dietrich V von Rötteln-Rotenburg. Although Dietrich bequeathed his property in his will to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel and St.
