The Rotenfels castle ruin, also known as Alt-Waxenberg, is located near Herzogsdorf in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel region.

History+

The construction of Rotenfels Castle is dated to around 1136. A Colo de Rotenvelse is mentioned as the first owner around this year. The Rotenfels family, ministeriales of the Wilhering-Wachsenbergers, owned the castle for approximately 160 years. Following Colo, other owners included Marquart (1160), Leutold (1210), Hermann (1237), Wernhart (1250), Konrad (1297), and another Wernhart (1309-1328). Around 1356, Alber was mentioned as the last known owner, after which the castle fell into disrepair. Around 1291, Waxenberg Castle was built nearby, and the regional court of Rotenfels presumably moved there. The name Rotenfels, derived from Middle High German “rôt” (red) and “vels” (rock), indicates the nature of the stone.
