About two kilometers north of Ebern, above the district of Eyrichshof, lies the Rotenhan Castle Ruin, a rock castle from the High Middle Ages. It is an example of the integration of natural rock formations into defensive architecture and is considered the ancestral seat of the Barons of Rotenhan.

History+

The Rotenhan family was first documented in 1190, indicating that their namesake ancestral seat, Rotenhan Castle, already existed at that time. Originally owned by the family, who served as vassals of the Diocese of Bamberg in the High Middle Ages, the castle underwent an expansion during the late Romanesque-early Gothic period. In 1323, Rotenhan Castle was besieged by the Würzburg Bishop Wolfram Wolfskeel von Grumbach and conquered after about a year.
