Rottenegg Castle

The first known mention of Rottenegg Castle dates back to July 25, 1285, when the brothers Chunrat and Sighart the Piber of Rotenek were named as owners. Around 1340, the male line of the Rottenegg Piber family died out with Otto II, and the castle came into the possession of Herrmann von Landenberg through his marriage to Otto's daughter Dietmut. In 1363, his sons Ruger and Berengar von Landenberg took over the lordship. Subsequently, the castle changed hands several times: in 1375 to the Lords of Walsee, in 1377 to Rudolf Neundling, and after the extinction of the Walsee family, to the Habsburgs. In 1489, Balthasar Neundlinger became the feudal lord, and in 1494, ownership passed to the Greisenecker family through his wife Agnes Greisenecker. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt by the Gingers, before passing to the Künast family in 1586 and shortly thereafter being sold to Christoph Artstetter von Wartberg. In 1600, the castle was converted into a palace.
