Rottenstein Castle

Allegedly, the castle was founded in 1142 by the Bavarian Count Palatine Aribo, the progenitor of the Counts of Görz. In the 13th century, the castle was administered by ministeriales of the Counts of Görz. For example, in 1269 by Pertoldus de Rotenstein, around 1292 by Otto von Rottenstein, and in 1295 by a Volker.

In the inheritance division of 1307 between Counts Heinrich and Albrecht von Görz, Rottenstein fell to Albrecht. In 1407, Count Meinhard von Görz enfeoffed Rottenstein to Ulrich von Weisspriach. Subsequently, the lordship passed to Friedrich Flekh, who was enfeoffed with it by Count Heinrich in 1440. In 1446, Flekh had to hand over Rottenstein to Konrad Hornberger at Heinrich's instruction. Through the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460, Rottenstein also fell to the Habsburgs.

In 1503, Heinrich Fulsin, the Queen's stable master, was the administrator of the castle. Afterwards, the lordship was pledged to Simon Krell. In 1513, Rottenstein and the associated office of Lind were pledged to Blasius Hölzl. In 1528, the lordship was sold by Archduke Ferdinand as a free property to Count Gabriel Salamanca-Ortenburg, who also acquired the lordship of Greifenburg with its high and low jurisdiction in 1537. At this time, Rottenburg lost its significance and was abandoned.

During the 16th century, the castle began to decay, as evidenced by Valvasor's drawing from 1688. The ruin is now in private ownership.
