Ruggburg Castle
In Eichenberg, Vorarlberg, the Ruggburg castle ruin stands on a mountain spur. It is located on the western slope of the Pfänder ridge and was once an important point along the Upper Tyrolean Salt Road, which led from Bad Hall to the shores of Lake Constance near Lochau.
History+
The origins of the Ruggburg date back to the 10th century, when the complex was built under the name Trudburg. It was destroyed as early as 1025 but rebuilt between 1040 and 1125. In 1245, Heinrich von Rugeburc was mentioned as the owner, a vassal who presumably served the Lords of Montfort of Bregenz or Tettnang. In 1430, the castle passed into the possession of the Vogt von Summerau family. Count Heinrich IX of Werdenberg-Sargans zu Vaduz acquired the castle in 1450. His daughter Elisabeth married Hans von Rechberg, who thereby became a co-owner.
