Søborg Castle

Søborg Castle Ruin, once Denmark's most powerful fortress, now stands in the capital region. Its remains tell of a past as a strategic stronghold and a prison.
History+
In its heyday, Søborg Castle was considered the strongest fortification in Denmark. Its significance was further emphasized by its function as a state prison, where figures such as Jens Große were imprisoned in the 13th century. The castle remained inhabited until the Count's Feud in 1535, a conflict that led to its destruction. From 1577, the remaining ruin was used as a quarry for other construction projects.
Location+
Søborg Castle Ruin is located in Søborg, in the Gribskov district of Denmark's capital region, Hovedstaden. It lies at an elevation of approximately 10 meters above sea level.
