The Saaleck Castle Ruin, a historical structure in the Burgenlandkreis district of Saxony-Anhalt, stands above the village of Saaleck, a district of Naumburg. It is known for its two widely visible round keeps.

History+

The noble free lords of Saaleck were first documented in 1140. This aristocratic family served the Bishop of Naumburg as well as the Landgraves of Thuringia and the Margraves of Meissen. It is believed that the Thuringian landgraves were the builders of the castle. Around 1220, the complex came into the possession of the Schenken von Vargula. Rudolf II, a landgravial cupbearer and lord of Saaleck, gained renown through his service at the court of Hermann I and his participation in Louis IV's crusade.
