Sachsendorf Castle

The origins of Sachsendorf Castle date back to the mid-11th century, when a fortified house was built here on the Manhartsberg. As early as the 10th century, unfortified wooden huts stood on this marshy site, later supplemented by a stone tower. Around 1180/1185, Alhart de Sassendorf is mentioned as the first documented owner. In the 13th century, the castle may have been the seat of the minnesinger Ulrich von Sachsendorf. The castle changed hands several times, including Ulrich der Zink von Sachsendorf and Niklas Pillung von St. Gilgenberg. Towards the end of the 1470s, the complex was destroyed by Hungarian troops and subsequently not rebuilt.
