Säusenstein Castle

Säusenstein Castle was probably built around 1295 by Duke Albrecht to protect mining operations and was already abandoned in the 15th century. It was originally called Slaednich; the name Säusenstein likely comes from the "roaring" (Gesäuse) of the gorge stream raging below the castle site. Originally, there was only a tower, whose substructure was three meters thick. From about 1322, it also served as a prison. The tower was probably more of a watchtower than a knight's tower, serving the Goldecker and previously the Wolfsecker soldiers for watch, defense, and dwelling.

A document from 1350 states that the Hopfriesen behind the fortress at Slädmich or in 1352 behind the castle at Schladming, as the area around the local copper hammer was long called. In Frederick III's chancellery book, it explicitly states in 1493: "A castle ruin near Slebdming is called Sewfenstain."
