Schallenberg Castle

Schallenberg Castle, originally owned by the Prince-Bishopric of Passau, was presumably built around 1231. In 1260, Heinrich de sancto Ulrico referred to himself as Heinrich de Salchinberc in a document, with his family retaining the name “von Schallenberg” even after they were no longer feudal lords around 1300. In 1308, a Christian von Urleugsb(p)erg is documented at Schallenberg. In 1360, the Passau bishop Gottfried von Weißeneck pledged the castle to Ulrich Leutzeneder, followed in 1378 by Dankwart Herleinsperger, who was also enfeoffed with the castle. In 1428, the dominion returned to the Schallenberg family through Kaspar von Schallenberg. The castle remained in their family possession until 1660. In 1440, Schallenberg was destroyed by the Hussites.
