History+

The construction of Scharfenberg Castle took place in the first half of the 12th century under the rule of the Staufer king Konrad III. It initially served as a state prison. In the early 13th century, it became the ancestral seat of the ministerial family of Scharfenberg, whose most prominent representative was Konrad III. von Scharfenberg, Bishop of Speyer and Chancellor of the Empire. Its current state as a ruin results from its destruction during the Peasants' War in 1525.
