The castle ruin of Scharfeneck is located in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge in Lower Austria. Its origins likely date back to the 11th century, although precise documentary evidence is lacking. The castle was once an important stronghold on the border with Hungary and played a role in regional conflicts.

Scharfeneck Castle was associated with the Hungarian noble family of Scharfeneck, which reached its peak around 1400. As a border castle, it was the scene of numerous clashes with Austrian nobles. For instance, Deutsch-Altenburg was raided in 1396, and Trautmannsdorf was seized in 1404. A retaliatory action by Stuchs von Trautmannsdorf in 1408 led to acts of revenge by the Scharfeneckers in 1412 in Edelsthal and Deutsch Haslau. After the extinction of the Scharfeneckers, the castle passed into the possession of the Hungarian King Sigismund in 1417. Under his rule, it was rebuilt according to Western models and later leased or sold by the crown. King Matthias Corvinus, for example, sold the castle to Ulrich von Grafeneck.
