Schauenburg Castle

The origins of Schauenburg date back to the 11th century when it was built by Duke Berthold II of Zähringen. Its first documented mention occurred in 1120. In 1131, the castle came into the possession of Duke Welf VI as a dowry through his wife Uta von Eberstein, whose grandfather, Count Palatine Gottfried von Calw, had once acquired Schauenburg through marriage. Uta von Schauenburg later bequeathed the castle to her brother Eberhard von Eberstein, a co-founder of Allerheiligen Abbey. The Lords of Eberstein were then the owners until Wolf von Eberstein sold half of the castle to Rudolf VII of Baden in 1386. After the death of the last Ludwig Winterbach von Schauenburg, a feud erupted between the other co-heir families of Schauenburg and Bernhard von Baden in 1402 and 1403, which the families won. After the Ebersteins, the castle fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden. Schauenburg experienced several sieges and was captured twice.
