Schauenburg Castle

The construction of Schauenburg castle took place in the first half of the 12th century by the noble free lords of Schauenburg, who were first mentioned in documents around 1130 and descended from the Hessones family. Although the family died out in the late 13th century, the castle continued to be used and was even expanded in the mid-14th century. A significant event was the siege during the Palatinate-Mainz War in 1460, when Elector Friedrich I besieged the castle for five days and had it razed after its surrender.
