The Schaumburg Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle at approximately 479 meters above sea level, is situated west of Schalkau in the Sonneberg district of Thuringia. It is the largest archaeological monument in the region.

History+

The origins of Schaumburg Castle date back to 1147. It was likely built by the Burgraves of Meissen from the Sterker von Wohlsbach family. In the late 12th or early 13th century, the complex came into the possession of the Schaumbergers, who made it their ancestral seat. With the first documentary mention of the Schaumbergers in 1216 at their castle, the development of the settlement of Schalkau also began, as servants and squires settled at the foot of the mountain. In the mid-14th century, the Schaumbergers were displaced by the Hennebergers.
