The Schenkenburg castle ruin, a former hilltop castle, sits on an isolated hill in the upper Kinzig Valley, offering a fascinating glimpse into the medieval history of Baden-Württemberg. Schenkenburg was likely built between 1220 and 1250 by the Schenken von Zell, a ministerial family of the Counts of Freiburg, who also gave their name to the nearby village. Their task was to protect mining interests in the Wittich district. In the early 14th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Geroldsecker, although the exact reasons for this change are unclear. Reports suggest possible disputes between the Counts of Freiburg and Schenk Burkhard. In 1433, the castle suffered significant damage during the Geroldsecker War of Succession.
