Schenkenstein Castle

The origins of Schenkenstein Castle date back to the High Middle Ages and served as the ancestral seat of the noble family von Stein. Konrad von Stein is mentioned in various documents between 1138 and 1152. Around 1230, the Lords of Stein sold the complex to Bishop Hartmann von Dillingen from Augsburg. However, by 1263, the dominion returned to the possession of the original sellers before passing to the Counts of Oettingen. They appointed the Schenken von Ehringen as their ministerialis family at the castle, who subsequently named themselves after their new fief.
