The castle ruin Schimmelsprung, a structure in the Kamp Valley, stands on a rock above the right bank of the Kamp river near Gars am Kamp-Thunau.

History+

The castle was first documented in 1196 as the seat of the ministerial family of Thunau. Its decline began at the end of the 14th century. The name Schimmelsprung (White Horse's Leap) originates from legends that tell of a tyrannical knight who, fleeing rebellious farmers, plunged to his death with his white horse over the cliff face. After this event, the castle was never rebuilt and fell into ruin.

The ruin Schimmelsprung is located in Thunau am Kamp, a district of Gars am Kamp in the Horn district, Lower Austria, Austria. It lies at an altitude of approx. 351 m above sea level, on a rock that slopes steeply on three sides towards the Kamp river.
