Schkölen Castle

The origins of Schkölen Castle are presumed to lie in a Slavic ring fort from the 10th century. As early as 1031, there is a first mention of a burgward named "Szolin". In the 15th century, the complex was expanded, but a fire in 1536 led to its decay. Ownership changed hands, including Count Wiprecht von Groitzsch in the late 11th century, Henry the Lion in 1158, and the Lords of Bünau in the 15th century. Until 1977, the ruin lay unnoticed and overgrown with vegetation, before excavations in 1968 and 1989 provided new insights into its history.

The castle ruin of Schkölen can be visited. Visitors will find a castle-like, rectangular complex that includes a two-story half-timbered residential building and a round tower.
