The castle ruin Schloßböckelheim, once also known as Böckelheim Castle, has origins dating back to the 9th century, when it was built on the remains of a Roman settlement.

History+

The castle was first documented in 824 in connection with Louis the Pious. In the 11th century, it was owned by the Duke of Lorraine before being destroyed by Henry III in 1044/1045. From 1065, ownership passed to the Bishop of Speyer, who enfeoffed the castle to the Counts of Sponheim in 1105. After a later division, Henry of Sponheim sold the complex to the Archbishop of Mainz. An attempt by Henry's brother to reverse the sale led to a feud between Sponheim and Mainz, sealing the castle's definitive loss.
