Schlosseck Castle

The origins of the castle date back to the 9th or 10th century, when an early medieval refuge castle existed on this site. In the early 13th century, a new construction in the Staufer style took place. It is assumed that the Counts of Leiningen were the builders of this high medieval complex. Archaeological findings indicate that the castle fell victim to a fire in the same century, but was still inhabited in the 14th century. The current name Schlosseck is a post-medieval, popular designation, as the original name and documentary evidence are missing. In 1879, initial excavations began under Christian Mehlis.
