Near Zeil am Main in the Haßberge district of Bavaria lies the castle ruin Schmachtenberg, a castellated castle from the Hussite Wars era. Conceived as a relatively late castle new build, it was intended to replace the older Zeil Castle and served as a border fortress of the Bamberg Prince-Bishopric.

History+

Schmachtenberg Castle was built around 1420/30 and first documented in 1466. Its construction was already designed for the use of firearms. In 1525, the castle suffered damage from rebellious peasants but was subsequently repaired. Only a few decades later, in the Second Margrave War of 1554, it was again devastated and subsequently abandoned. In 1695, its stones were used for the construction of the Zeil town castle.
