The Schnepfenburg castle ruin, a medieval fortification, is located in Bad Salzungen in the Wartburg district, Thuringia. It was originally built as a bulwark of a salt-producing town.

History+

The origins of settlement on the castle hill date back to prehistoric times, when Celts utilized a saline spring there. Later settlement phases up to the late Middle Ages are archaeologically proven. Around 1160, the castle complex was militarily expanded under the aegis of Fulda Abbey and first documented in 1166. It was later integrated into the town's fortifications of Bad Salzungen, serving as its southwestern bulwark.
