Schönberg Castle
The castle ruin Schönberg is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 652.1 m above sea level in the municipality of Auberg in the district of Rohrbach in Upper Austria. The remains of this castle complex are located above the "Schönbergmühle" (Teufelsbrücke) on a steep slope down to the Große Mühl river.
A Chunrad de Schöneberg is mentioned around 1209. In 1256, "Schönperge" is mentioned. Schönberg was a castle of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau and is mentioned as such in the Second Passau Tradition Codex of 1240 (Schonenberge, Sconenberge). The castle was administered by burgraves. Known among them are Ulrich der Lechner (1391), Wenzel der Panhalm (1431), Hanns der Hollerberger (1433) and Dankwart Herleinsperger (1436). In 1462, Schönberg became a princely fief. The castle was abandoned in the 16th century; why is not known. Already in Georg Matthäus Vischer's engraving from 1674 in his "Topographia Austriae superioris modernae", Schönberg (Shenberg) appears as a ruin.

The substructure is still recognizable on the castle hill on the orographically left bank of the Große Mühl, despite recent leveling. Minor wall remains made of rubble stone (wall corner, retaining walls) can be found on the steep slope. Ceramic finds and finds of iron arrows were also made here. Earlier existing wall remains were used for house construction in 1920. From the Große Mühl, an interesting view of the castle ruin is still offered today.
