The Schönberg Castle Ruin, a former hilltop castle, is situated in Auberg, Upper Austria, offering a fascinating glimpse into past eras. Its remains are picturesquely located above the so-called Devil's Bridge, on a steep slope leading to the Große Mühl river, giving it a prominent and widely visible position.

History+

The first mention of a Chunrad de Schöneberg occurred around 1209, while the castle itself was documented as “Schönperge” in 1256. Schönberg originally belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau, as evidenced by the Second Passau Tradition Codex from 1240. The castle was administered by burgraves, including Ulrich der Lechner (1391), Wenzel der Panhalm (1431), Hanns der Hollerberger (1433), and Dankwart Herleinsperger (1436). In 1462, Schönberg became a princely fief. The complex was abandoned in the 16th century, though the exact reasons remain unknown. As early as 1674, an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer depicted the castle as a ruin.
