In the municipality of Öhningen, the Schrotzburg castle ruin, also known as Diepoldsburg, is on a spur of the Schiener Berg.

History+

The origins of Schrotzburg date back to the 9th century, when a Count Scrot, a nobleman, owned property in this region and gave the castle its name. As early as 914, a complex called Thietpoldsburg existed on this site, where Bishop Salomo of Constance was held captive. In the 12th century, a new fortress was built on the same spot, which was documented in 1393 as Schrotzenburg. Ownership changed hands, including the Barons of Klingenberg and the Lords of Schrotzberg and Schienen. The castle was destroyed in 1441 by the Swabian League of Cities as a “robber's nest,” with the village of Schienen also being burned down.
