Schrotzburg Castle

The ruin of Schrotzburg, also called Diepoldsburg, is the ruin of a spur castle on a 693 m above sea level northern spur of the Schiener Berg near the district of Schienen in the municipality of Öhningen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg.

Around the year 800, a Count Scrot, a member of the imperial nobility, owned property in this area; the name of the castle is derived from him.

In the 12th century, a new fortress was built on the site of the former Thietpoldsburg, which must have already existed in 914 and where Bishop Salomo of Konstanz was imprisoned. This fortress was mentioned in 1393 as Schrotzenburg. Owners of the castle were the Barons of Klingenberg, the Lords of Schrotzberg, and the Lords of Schienen. In 1441, the castle, then under the rule of the Lords of Schienen, was destroyed as a "robber's nest" by the Swabian League of Cities, and the village of Schienen was burned down. Of the former castle complex, which included a keep with a base area of 7.5 by 7.5 meters and a wall thickness of 1.5 meters, only remnants of walls remain.
