Schwabsburg Castle

Schwabsburg Castle is the ruin of a castle at about 84 meters above sea level, U-shaped and surrounded by the district of Schwabsburg, part of the municipality of Nierstein in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Schwabsburg was probably founded around 1210 and was first mentioned in a document in 1257 in a royal charter by Richard of Cornwall as a stronghold of Staufer rule on the Rhine.

In the 14th century, the castle came into the possession of the Archbishop of Mainz as a pledge of the Empire for 60 years and thereafter became the property of the Electors of the Palatinate.

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed by an army led by the Spanish field marshal and general Spinola and demolished in 1799 after its auction.
