The Schwarzenbach castle ruin rises on the Schlossberg in the market town of the same name in Lower Austria. Located just under a kilometer northwest of the village, it marks the beginning of the Schwarzenbach Valley.

History+

The origins of Schwarzenbach Castle likely date back to the late 12th or early 13th century. Its first documented mention appears in 1254 as “castrum Suarchumpah” in the Peace Treaty of Ofen, which awarded it to the Hungarian King Béla IV. In September 1337, the castle was besieged by a Hungarian army under Leustachius and captured before October 4th of the same year. Although Schwarzenbach was intended to be exchanged for Anchenstein Castle in the Peace of Pressburg in 1337, it was not until 1362, through the Peace of Ofen, that it was handed over to Austria.
