Sigberg Castle
The Sigberg castle ruin near Göfis in Vorarlberg, Austria, is a medieval complex dating back to the 13th century. It is now a protected monument.
History+
The construction of Sigberg Castle began in the mid-13th century. In 1355, it was captured and razed by Count Rudolf of Feldkirch after citizens, who were in conflict with him, had entrenched themselves there. The castle suffered further destruction in 1435 by Count Friedrich of Toggenburg. By the early 17th century, Sigberg was already a ruin; only the castle chapel remained in use until 1637. The name "Sigberg" is derived from the Celtic "segos," meaning "victory, power, strength," indicating a fortified settlement, similar to the Romanic "Montfort."
