History+

The construction of Spangenberg Castle is presumed to have taken place in the 11th century. In 1100, it was granted to the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer as a feudal castle through a bishop's donation. In 1317, Knight Diether von Zoller was appointed as castellan, followed by Eberhard von Sickingen in 1431 and Heinrich von Remchingen in 1439. A rivalry existed with the neighboring Erfenstein Castle, as both castles belonged to different lords. In 1470, both complexes were mutually destroyed during the Weissenburg Feud, a conflict between Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate and Duke Ludwig I of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
