Spitzenberg Castle

Spitzenberg Castle is the ruin of a classic medieval noble castle of the hilltop type, west of Kuchen in the Göppingen district.
The ruin stands on a southern ridge of the Filstal valley, on the 665-meter-high Spitzenberg. Only a few wall remnants of the castle remain.
The Spitzenberger family, who belonged to the relatives of the Zähringer and the Counts of Helfenstein, named themselves after it. A well-known representative of the family was Bishop Gottfried von Spitzenberg.
The castle today appears as an unkempt ruin, still showing traces of an excavation by the Swabian Albverein in 1913 under Konrad Albrecht Koch. The most important finds from this excavation are lost. They were stored for a long time in the town hall in Kuchen before they were allegedly thrown away during a renovation. Parts of the finds are in the Geislingen Local History Museum. The finds essentially date to the late 14th century, but the castle is said to have been destroyed as early as 1311.
