Sponheim Castle

The Sponheim Castle Ruin, once known as Spanheim, is a medieval spur castle on the edge of the Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate. It stands on an elongated mountain spur, flanked on its south and east sides by the Ellerbach stream.
History+
The origins of Sponheim Castle likely date back to the 11th century. Its first documented mention appears in 1127. During the 12th century, it was expanded into the ancestral seat of the Counts of Sponheim. In the 13th century, the castle lost its central importance as the main residence and subsequently served as the abode for comital ministerials. An indulgence letter from 1300 confirms the existence of a castle chapel.
