History+

The origins of Sporkenburg date back to the late 13th century, when Emmerich von Andernach and Heinrich von Lahnstein began constructing a first fortification. However, this was destroyed by Count Otto von Nassau, the bailiff of Kurtrier. Subsequently, Heinrich von Lahnstein transferred his rights to Heinrich II. von Helfenstein, who presumably had Sporkenburg rebuilt at a new location in 1310. He enfeoffed the castle to Archbishop Balduin of Trier, and Sporkenburg developed into the center of the Helfenstein-Sporkenburg lordship. In 1515, Johann von Helfenstein sold the castle, already described as dilapidated, to Johann and Quyrin von Nassau. In 1604, ownership transferred to the Metternich family. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed by French troops in 1635.
