Starhemberg Castle
The Starhemberg Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle, extends over the ridge in the Piesting Valley in Lower Austria.
History+
Margrave Otakar III of Styria had Starhemberg Castle built between 1140 and 1145 to secure the then border between Styria and Ostmark along the Piesting. In 1192, the castle, along with Styria, passed to the Babenbergs. Duke Frederick the Quarrelsome, the last Babenberg ruler, had the complex expanded and fortified. In the 13th century, Starhemberg served as a safe place for archives and family treasures, guarded by the Teutonic Order. After the Battle of Dürnkrut in 1278, it fell to the Habsburgs. In 1482, the castle was captured by Matthias Corvinus. During the second Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1683, the castle offered protection to the surrounding population.
