On a mountain ridge south of the Stauf district of Eisenberg in the Donnersbergkreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, lies the castle ruin of Stauf, a spur castle. It is considered the oldest documented castle complex in the Palatinate.

History+

The origins of Stauf Castle likely date back to before the year 1000. Around this time, Duke Konrad I of Carinthia from the Salian dynasty was first mentioned as a resident. In the 12th century, the castle, an imperial fief of the Staufer family from whom it also took its name, was owned by the Gottfried von Stauf family.
