The Staufen Castle Ruin, a former hilltop castle, stands on a hill above the town of Staufen im Breisgau.

History+

The origins of Staufen Castle likely date back to the early 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Staufen. The complex was first explicitly mentioned in a document from 1248. In the 14th century, due to financial difficulties of the castle lords, the city of Freiburg acquired shares in the castle and secured a right of access, guaranteeing military entry and protection from attacks launched from the castle. The lineage of the Lords of Staufen died out in 1602, and from 1607, the castle was uninhabited.
