Stecklenburg Castle

The Stecklenburg castle ruin, situated on a small hill not far from the village of Stecklenberg, has its origins in the 11th century. It was built on the foundations of an older fortification. In the 12th century, the castle suffered destruction during military conflicts but was subsequently rebuilt. In 1281, the property passed into the possession of the Halberstadt Abbey. The castle remained inhabited until the early 18th century, after which parts such as the brewery and the castle chapel were demolished. Subsequently, the complex fell into disrepair and served as a quarry. It is thanks to the commitment of the then head forester of Thale that the ruin was not completely dismantled.
